Papercraft Friday #42: Animal Crossing Girl

May 22, 2009

AC GirlI played Animal Crossing on the Gamecube almost every day for over a year, and found it really enjoyable.  Some time after quitting that, Animal Crossing: Wild World came out for the Nintendo DS.  I played it for awhile.  In sort of a Catch-22, though, I don’t tend to play portable games at home when I can be doing something else, and I don’t really do things outside of the house that would allow for some portable playing (like a train commute or something), so I don’t get as much portable gaming in as I’d like.  Consequently, didn’t really keep up with AC:WW.

Of course I bought Animal Crossing: City Folk when it was released, and played a little of it.  I was (still am) rather disappointed that Nintendo has not really evolved the series much.  There’s so much you could do with it.  So I played for a few days and stopped.  Then my brother got it and started playing it, and he and his family really got into it, and there talk about it slowly sucked me in to the point where I’m playing it quite a lot.  Gotta get that perfect town!

So when thinking about which papercraft to feature this week, and with Animal Crossing still on the brain, I remembered seeing this one of an Animal Crossing girl character fishing.  If anyone knows what the sign says, let me know!

C64 lands on the U.S. Wii Virtual Console

February 23, 2009

c64wii

Seems like only a year ago when I was lamenting the fact that the European Virtual Console was getting Commodore 64 games… wait, it WAS a year ago, almost ot the day.  Well, it’s time for the U.S. to get in on that sweet C64 action.  According to Nintendo today:

The other big news this week is the hotly anticipated launch of Commodore 64 game titles on Virtual Console. Starting with two classic martial arts games and an awesome car racing title, we’re thrilled to add yet another old-school gaming platform to the mix. Virtual Console already offers classic games that originally appeared on a variety of platforms, and with the addition of Commodore 64, Wii owners can expect even more vintage games to rediscover and enjoy.

The titles added this week are The Last Ninja, International Karate and Pitstop II, and they are $5 each.  Can’t say as those are among my list of favorites, but this news makes me a happy, happy camper.

Game Impressions: House of the Dead: Overkill

February 19, 2009

hotdo3

Introduction

Mother****er!  This ain’t your daddy’s Mario game.  The princess is definitely in another mother****ing castle, replaced by a big breasted stripper named Varla Guns.  House of the Dead: Overkill does everything in a big, over-the-top way.  Does the “Grindhouse” look and arcade lightgun style work for this made-for-Wii Sega reboot of the HOTD franchise?

WiiLove

February 3, 2009

Probably the most surprising thing to me about gaming these days is the reaction of the gaming media and some gamers themselves to the Nintendo Wii.  I’ve posted about it before.  I don’t understand the negativity.  Sure, the Wii has its shortcomings, just like any other console.  But I see plenty to like about the Wii, and Nintendo’s success in this generation as a positive for the industry as a whole.

Andrew Adam has a guest piece over at Infendo.com called “Let’s WiiLove, Not WiiHate.”  Andrew summarizes my thoughts on the topic very well.

Internet communities tick me off sometimes.  No matter if I am on the Nsider2 forums, surfing internet gaming sites, or listening to podcasts, it’s easy to hear a lot of bashing of the Wii.  “I’m bored with my Wii.”  “The Wii has no good games.”  “The casual players are killing video games.”

Really people? I don’t quite understand all the complaining. Does no one remember the last two generations of Nintendo consoles? We have entered the second glory age of Nintendo reigning on top, and all people can do is gripe.

He goes on to counter all the bashing he mentions with some well-reasoned arguments.  Check out the whole article over at Infendo.com.

The Nintendo Dilemma

January 27, 2009

dilemma

I’ve started and deleted this post several times, because I’ve been having a hard time collating my thoughts into a coherent post.  I probably won’t succeed this time either.  But I keep having this nagging jumble of thoughts that I need to get out.  It’s gonna be a long ride.  It’s about what I like to call The Nintendo Dilemma.

World of Goo Soundtrack

January 21, 2009

worldofgoosountrack1

I’ve been playing the excellent World of Goo lately, and am pleased to say that Kyle Gabler of 2D Boy, indie developers extraordinaire, has released for free the soundtrack for World of Goo.  Being a bit obsessive about good game soundtracks, I snatched it up.  You should too!

Zark’s Most Anticipated Wii Games of 2009

January 20, 2009

wii09

Now that the ungodly rush of good holiday titles has come and gone, my thoughts start to drift towards what’s coming next.  While I have plenty of games I still need to sink my teeth into from 2008, I am admitedly pretty excited about some of the upcoming Wii titles that are in development, so I figured I’d start there, with my list of most anticipated Wii games of 2009.

Beware the Wii

December 23, 2008

According to The Sun:

kneeTEN people a week in Britain are hospitalised from playing Wii games.

The growing toll has prompted NHS doctors to warn of the dangers.  Wii-itis sufferers usually have excruciating pain in the right shoulder or knee.

Dr Dev Mukerjee, of Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex, said: “There has been a 100 per cent increase in patients complaining of Wii-itis.  “I’ve seen many patients aged between eight and 13 — and I’ve seen adults.

“It’s possible that Wii-itus may lead to rheumatism and arthritis in later life. Patients often have inflammation of the shoulder or wrist.”  Others have a ligament injury dubbed Wii-knee which some have blamed on the popular Wii-Fit game.

Dr Mukerjee said: “People who are double-jointed are most likely to suffer from Wii-knee — and in extreme cases the knee cap can be dislocated or can even pop out.”  Treatment includes cortisone injections and anti-inflammatory painkillers. Recovery takes up to three months.

OMG how dangerous!  A 100% increase (from 5 to 10 people per country per week)!  You could have rheumatism and arthritis in later life!  Wii-knee!  Cortisone injections!  Painkillers!  Those are addicting!  I never knew… I never knew…  First we find out that playing games was addicting, and now we find out that the injuries suffered through play could be life-altering!  And we find this out right before Christmas!  Just think of all those torture machines that are already wrapped and under the tree!  Oh the humanity…

Welcome to the Club (Nintendo)

December 18, 2008

club_nintendoClub Nintendo is live!  Well, sorta.  For many years, Nintendo fans in North America have watched with envy as people in Japan and Europe enjoyed the benefits of Nintendo’s loyalty program.  Registering purchased hardware and software earns you points (“coins”) which you trade in for items.  Nintendo resisted starting up Club Nintendo in North America due to cost, but finally relented to demand and announced in October that it would be coming before the end of the year.  It’s buggy, but it’s here!

Just go to club.nintendo.com to sign up.  I was able to transfer my previous nintendo.com login to Club Nintendo, and I’ve been able to take a few surveys and earn a few coins, but it sends you back to the login screen frequently as well.  Rewards include the lusted after Game & Watch Collection DS game, playing cards, DS and game card cases, game racks… about 11 things to choose from that cost between 300 and 800 coins each.  You get 50 coins for taking surveys about Wii games, 30 for DS games, and 10 for WiiShop Channels/games.  You get an additional 10 points for then registering the game you took the survey on.

I’m sure site stability will improve over the next few days.  Register now!  If you link your old Nintendo account, it should pull over surveys for previously registered games (although it could take hours right now as the site is slammed).  Then get out all your registration codes and start putting them in.  That should get you some points and more surveys.  Lastly, don’t forget to link your WiiShop account to your Club Nintendo account.  You have to do that on the Wii in order for the games you purchased there to show up in Club Nintendo.  Good luck.
