I feel immersed in all things Mass Effect lately. Aside from playing Mass Effect 2 on the Xbox 360 and playing Mass Effect Galaxy on my iPod Touch, I’ve been reading the Mass Effect: Ascension audiobook. Author Drew Karpyshyn was the lead writer on the first Mass Effect game, is co-lead writer on Mass Effect 2, and also wrote the first Mass Effect novel, Mass Effect: Revelation. I read and reviewed that novel. How does this one stack up?

EA has no idea what to do with their intellectual properties. Electronic Arts purchased and subsequently decimated developer Origin Systems Inc, wasting the opportunities it had with all of the IP’s that Origin developed throughout the 80s and early 90s. Then in 2008, EA gives us the awful top-down, 2D space combat game that they slapped the words Wing Commander onto to try to lure old fans of the quality 3D Wing Commander series to purchase it. For shame!
But now, they’ve done it again!

AdFreak.com has compiled links to videos of every “Get A Mac” ad ever aired in the U.S. since the campaign’s inception in 2006. They haven’t aired a new one since October so this may well be the complete campaign. Apple’s website has quite a few of these but not every single one.
Even though Windows 7 seems like a big step in the right direction for Microsoft, I still love saying “Windows 7 won’t have any of the problems that Windows Vista had…” or similar when I’m using one of my myriad of problematic work computers (from ad #64). Check them out!

I tend to buy more games than I play, and play more games than I finish, so I though this year I’d make a list of games played, with an * next to ones I’ve finished. I’m sure this list will miss a lot, but here’s a go at it.
- Age of Booty (XBLA) *
- Animal Crossing: City Fold (Wii)
- Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3)
- The Beatles: Rock Band (Xbox 360) *
- Bejeweled Blitz (web & iPod touch)
- Beneath a Steel Sky Remastered (iPod Touch)
- Beyond Good And Evil (Gamecube)
- Chrono Trigger (DS)
- Deadly Creatures (Wii)
- Dead Space (PS3)
- Dragon Age: Origins (XBLA)
- Dragon’s Lair (iPod Touch)
- Dungeon Hunter (iPod Touch)
- Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard (DS)
- Fable II (Xbox 360)
- Farmville (web)
- Flower (PSN) *
- Final Fantasy XII (PS2) *
- Gears of War (Xbox 360) *
- Gears of War 2 (Xbox 360) *
- God of War (PS2)
- Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (DS)
- Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox) *
- Halo 2 (Xbox)
- House of the Dead: Overkill (Wii) *
- Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings (Wii)
- The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (DS)
- Legends of Zork (web)
- LEGO Rock Band (Xbox 360) *
- Metroid Prime (Gamecube)
- Moon (DS)
- New Super Mario Bros Wii (Wii)
- NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits (Wiiware)
- Pac-Man Championship Edition (XBLA & iPod Touch)
- Peggle (iPod Touch)
- Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360) *
- Resistance 2 (PS3) *
- Rock Band (iPod Touch)
- The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition (XBLA & iPod Touch)
- Shadow Complex (XBLA) *
- Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii)
- Sims 3 (Mac)
- Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
- Tales of Monkey Island Part 1 (Wiiware)
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Reshelled (XBLA)
- Toki Tori (Wiiware)
- Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (PS3) *
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3) *
- Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (Mac) *
- Wii Sports Resort (Wii)
- World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (Mac)
Not a bad list. I actually finished more than I expected. Sadly, there are no PSP games on that list. Not a good year for the PSP, even outside the PSP Go fiasco. The Playstation 3, the console I have the least amount of games for, actually had a very good showing this year.
For those that just have to know, my Game of the Year, without a shred of doubt, is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Introduction
It’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been strumming like a dog. I didn’t intend to pick up The Beatles: Rock Band. At least, not right away. I played the original Rock Band a little, but never got really into it. Rock Band 2, on the other hand, I played and played. While medium difficulty is about as good as I get, I did play through all of the “campaign” mode to get the “Rock Immortal Inductee” achievement, got the “One Million Fans” achievement, and played enough to have $100,000 to spend in the Rock Shop for the “Clothes to the Edge” achievement. But I haven’t picked up the old plastic guitar in 9-10 months. And while I like quite a few tunes by The Beatles, I’m not a fan per se. I don’t own any of their music. But last Friday I picked it up on whim anyway, and Yesterday I went on a Day Tripper through story mode. Was it a Magical Mystery Tour, or will I just Let It Be?

Introduction
One of the most highly anticipated games this summer has been Shadow Complex. Part of XBLA’s Summer of Arcade 2009, Shadow Complex has been hailed as a game that “reset(s) the bar for what we can expect from an Xbox Live Arcade title” (Kotaku). It has also been called “one of the best gaming experiences of this generation” (CAG) and “one of the best games yet in 2009.” (IGN) Whenever a game gets this kind of press, my BS radar goes off. Things are always “the best” until next week, just like stores have “the lowest price ever” until next week’s sale. So does Shadow Complex live up to the hype?

The week of E3 is an exciting time to learn about what’s coming up in the world of gaming. Yet as I watch E3 unfold this week, through coverage on G4TV and on gaming sites like Kotaku and Joystiq, I tend to feel “alone in the dark” with regards to my gaming preferences. Maybe I missed the memo, but when did the word videogame come to only mean first-person shooter? But I thought about it more and more as the week has gone on, and I’ve come to realize that I maybe I’m really not as alone as I thought I was.
