APPraisal: Mass Effect Galaxy

January 25, 2010

I finally got around to playing Mass Effect Galaxy.  Although it’s been out since June of last year, I never got around to it.  But with the imminent release of Mass Effect 2 tomorrow on the PC and Xbox 360, I’ve been immersing myself in all things Mass Effect again, like reading the latest novel, Mass Effect: Ascension, and the new comic Mass Effect: Redemption.  So I figured it was time to give Mass Effect Galaxy a shot.

APPraisal: Pac-Man Championship Edition

January 18, 2010

Throughout the years, re-imaginings of Pac-Man have generally sucked.  “New” Pac-Man games haven’t been good since Ms. Pac-Man.  But when Pac-Man Championship Edition came on the scene in 2007, it created quite a stir.  The swansong game of original Pac-Man creator Tōru Iwatani,Pac-Man Championship Edition was released on the Xbox Live Arcade in 2007.  Does the iPhone / iPod Touch version of Pac-Man C.E. stand a ghost of a chance?

APPraisal: Dragon’s Lair

December 7, 2009

“Dragon’s Lair!  The fantasy adventure where you become a valiant knight on a quest to rescue the fair princess from the clutches of an evil dragon!”  I can remember well playing the Dragon’s Lair arcade machine.  Specifically, I remember the Sears at Chesterfield Mall had one that beckoned to me with that looping intro every time I was in there with my parents.  Space Ace has already been on the app store for awhile, so you had to figure that Dragon’s Lair was not far behind.  Dirk Daring in the palm of your hand!  Can it possibly live up to the nostalgia?

APPRaisal: C64

November 16, 2009

Confession:  I bought the iPod Touch for this app.  Ok, not really, but I thought about it.  Unfortunately, the C64 app got pulled from the iTunes store for violating Apple’s Terms of Service about a week before I got the iPod Touch.  (Why that happened is a story unto itself.)  Manomio revised the emulator and Apple finally approved the re-release last week.

APPraisal: Ambiance

November 9, 2009

ipod-ambiance0

I’m a bit of a newcomer to the whole app scene, and when I saw the app called Ambiance recently, I thought “what a good idea.”  I’ve since learned that there seemed to be a bit of controversy surrounding the current version and the previous one, now called Ambiance Classic.  But I was oblivious to all that when I downloaded Ambiance and formed my impressions.

APPraisal: Rock Band

October 26, 2009

ipod-rockband0

Appy Rockin’ Monday!  I’m a fan of Rock Band on the Xbox 360.  I own Rock Band, Rock Band 2 and The Beatles: Rock Band on that platform.  So an official Rock Band app for the iPhone / iPod Touch immediately peaked my curiosity.

APPraisal: Frotz

October 12, 2009

ipod-frotz0

‘Appy Monday Interaction Fiction fans!  For those who don’t know, Interactive Fiction (IF) games, a.k.a. text adventures, were popular back in the 70′s and 80′s, when games weren’t defined by the quantity of their pixels.  From Colossal Cave Adventure (which I played on the mainframe when my dad would take me to his work) through the Infocom era, text-based games used gamer’s imaginations to supplement detailed and often humorous plots.  Back in the day, games like Zork were household names.  Frotz taps into the power of the iPhone / iPod Touch to … well, to run these games in all their non-graphical splendor.

APPraisal: Pizza Hut

October 5, 2009

ipod-pizzahut0

‘Appy Monday once again.  Today I’m going to talk about the official Pizza Hut mobile ordering application for the iPhone/iPod Touch.  The Pizza Hut folks call it “a revolution in mobile ordering” that’s “easy, fast and fun” and “a killer app for your appetite.”  Is it all that and a box of breadsticks?
