Game Impressions: The Beatles: Rock Band

September 14, 2009

BeatlesRockBand0

Introduction

It’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been strumming like a dog.  I didn’t intend to pick up The Beatles: Rock Band.  At least, not right away.  I played the original Rock Band a little, but never got really into it.  Rock Band 2, on the other hand, I played and played.  While medium difficulty is about as good as I get, I did play through all of the “campaign” mode to get the “Rock Immortal Inductee” achievement, got the “One Million Fans” achievement, and played enough to have $100,000 to spend in the Rock Shop for the “Clothes to the Edge” achievement.  But I haven’t picked up the old plastic guitar in 9-10 months.  And while I like quite a few tunes by The Beatles, I’m not a fan per se.  I don’t own any of their music.  But last Friday I picked it up on whim anyway, and Yesterday I went on a Day Tripper through story mode.  Was it a Magical Mystery Tour, or will I just Let It Be?

Game Impressions: Shadow Complex

August 24, 2009

cboxshadowncomplex

Introduction

One of the most highly anticipated games this summer has been Shadow Complex.  Part of XBLA’s Summer of Arcade 2009, Shadow Complex has been hailed as a game that “reset(s) the bar for what we can expect from an Xbox Live Arcade title” (Kotaku).  It has also been called “one of the best gaming experiences of this generation” (CAG) and “one of the best games yet in 2009.” (IGN)  Whenever a game gets this kind of press, my BS radar goes off.  Things are always “the best” until next week, just like stores have “the lowest price ever” until next week’s sale.  So does Shadow Complex live up to the hype?

April 13, 2009

gears32

Introduction

I played the original Gears of War shortly after I started this website.  I had meant to do a Game Impressions on it back then, but never got around to it.  Gears of War 2 came along and now I’ve played it as well.  So what did I think?  How did it compare to the original?  Read on, grubs! Game Impressions: Age of Booty

March 12, 2009

Introduction

I am not a fan of real-time strategy (RTS) games.  I can certainly see the appeal.  Maybe they’re intimidating, having to order little little troops hither and yon.  Maybe they give me the impression that in order to be any good at them, you have to invest a considerable amount of time learning all the nuances, and I just don’t want to limit myself to one thing.  So it’s odd, to say the least, to see me giving my game impressions of a RTS game.  I read about Certain Affinity’s downloadable game Age of Booty in a gaming magazine and the concept intrigued me.  I checked out the demo on Xbox Live Arcade, and decided to take the plunge.  So do I now have a Certain Affinity for piratey RTS games?

Game Impressions: Flower

March 8, 2009

Introduction

Every once in awhile, a developer will come along with a game that makes people question the nature of what is a game.  Indie games and/or games that are available only for download as WiiWare, or the Xbox Arcade, or the PSN store tend to take more risks and expand the boundaries a bit more than games delivered on more traditional media.  The first offering from the folks at thatcamecompany, fløw, was definitely a mold breaker.  Does their second offering, Flower, soar?

Game Impressions: House of the Dead: Overkill

February 19, 2009

Introduction

Mother****er!  This ain’t your daddy’s Mario game.  The princess is definitely in another mother****ing castle, replaced by a big breasted stripper named Varla Guns.  House of the Dead: Overkill does everything in a big, over-the-top way.  Does the “Grindhouse” look and arcade lightgun style work for this made-for-Wii Sega reboot of the HOTD franchise?

Game Impressions: Final Fantasy XII

January 28, 2009

ffxii-1Before you say “Why is he giving game impressions on a game that came out in 2006,” let me say (a) I don’t care, and (b) any decent game is worth playing at any time, not just within so many days of release.  I actually started playing Final Fantasy XII shortly after it was released.  Unfortunately, it was released on October 31, 2006 in North America, a mere 20 days before a little console called the Nintendo Wii came out.  I got distracted by the release of the Wii started playing Zelda Twilight Princess.  I tried to juggle both and ended up finishing neither.  But the lure of Final Fantasy XII persisted, and I picked it back up again in the Fall of ’08, finally finishing the main storyline in January 2009.  So was it worth a two year playthrough?

Zark’s Top 10 Games of 2007

January 2, 2008

I generally try to avoid giving a rating or classification to games, as it’s very subjective and often doesn’t mean anything from person to person.  But people have been clamoring for me to do a Top 10 list for 2007, and I’m bowing to the pressure.

My list is very subjective, and only pertains to games that I’ve played.  I don’t play some genres, so games in those genres are not included, even though they may be very good games that others would pick for their top 10 (I’m looking at you, Call of Duty 4, Rock Band, Guitar Hero III).  So without further ado….

Game Impressions #3: Bioshock

November 15, 2007

Bioshock cover art

Introduction

The highly anticipated Bioshock, by 2K Boston (formerly known as Irrational Games), was released in late August to high acclaim.  Billed as a morality-based first person shooter with RPG elements, it’s art deco styling and intriging mechanic of “Big Daddies” and “Little Sisters” set it apart, and fan groups such as The Cult of Rapture were active and vocal before the game was ever released.  The Limited Collector’s Edition, which was “demanded” by fans who voted on what it would contain, was sold by Gamestop and containted a Big Daddy statue, sold out instantly and became instant collector’s items, which unopened still fetch up to $125 too this day.  So does Bioshock live up to the hype?

Game Impressions #2: Portal

October 27, 2007

Portal

Introduction

Portal is a small game included in The Orange Box by Valve. Three to five hours tops from start to finish, not counting all the achievements you can get with the Xbox 360 version. But it might be worth buying The Orange Box all by itself…
