APPraisal: SIRIUS XM Premium Online

April 5, 2010

I only do APPraisals on apps I personally found interesting or useful enough to try.  I don’t always end up liking every app, but I don’t buy or download something just to review it.  I was hesitant to discuss the SIRIUS XM Premium Online app, though, because it requires a subscription on top of the app which can be a bit pricey.  But given how much I use the app (a spoiler to what I think of it below), I figured a discussion of it and the ways I use it might be appropriate.  Someone else out there might get some tips or have some for me as well.

APPraisal: Comet Racer

March 29, 2010

The iPhone / iPod Touch excels at small little game apps that didn’t cost much to make, and don’t make you feel bad for tossing down a buck or two to give them a try.  Comet Racer is one of those apps.

Amazon Kindle for Mac

March 18, 2010

Amazon released a beta today of its Kindle software for the Mac operating system.  As the press release states “Kindle books can now be read on the Kindle, Kindle DX, iPhone, iPod touch, BlackBerry, PC and Mac, and soon the iPad.”  I don’t know that I’ll ditch my Kindle in favor of reading on my Mac, but I’m glad to see the Mac love.  With Whispersync technology syncing my bookmarks and last page read across devices, it just gives me one more option to get that latest novel read.  Download yours today.

APPraisal: Weber’s On The Grill

February 8, 2010

When I first got my iPod Touch, I was dumping apps onto it like crazy.  Free apps, apps that made top 10 lists, just about anything.  Many of those have been long since deleted.  Weber’s On The Grill, however, has made the cut, and definitely falls into the category of “there’s an app for that.”

APPraisal: Google Voice

February 1, 2010

ZarkSeven has this cool segment on his blog called “APPraisal”.  It’s his weekly…or mostly weekly…review of various iPhone/iPod touch applications.  Since Zark doesn’t use Google Voice and I’m addicted to it, he asked me if I would take a look at the new Google Voice mobile site and give a review for his APPraisal segment.  I’m new to this…but I love new stuff…so here goes!

I’m a huge fan of Google. I use a lot of their services as my primary way to communicate. From Gmail for my email to GTalk for my IM needs, Google just seems to “get it” when it comes to stable communication tools that just work.

One of their most amazing services is Google Voice. If you don’t know what GV is, check it out here. Google does a much better job explaining it than I do.

Panera Bread iMac World of Warcraft Player

January 29, 2010

People are weird.

I couldn’t help but look at the article on Gizmodo.com entitled Five Questions With Panera Bread iMac Man.  I’d seen the story floating around for about a month.  The Panera Bread reference in the title caught my eye, as it’s a local success story as a restaurant chain called St. Louis Bread Company that expanded nationally as Panera Bread.  Then when I saw the picture, and the guy was playing World of Warcraft, I was hooked.  But no one had asked him the burning question: why?

According to this week’s Gizmodo article, James the Panera Bread iMac Man says he goes there to use their internet connection because he doesn’t have one at home.  He doesn’t say he can’t get one at home, so you have to wonder.  He’s drinking coffee, and I assume he buys something each time he goes.  He’s playing an MMO, which has a monthly subscription fee.  He has a 20″ iMac, which wasn’t cheap and is fairly heavy (I know, I have one).  He has an iLugger bag to carry the iMac around in, which goes for about 80 bucks.  But he can’t pay for an internet connection at home??

There has to be more to this story.  He can’t physically get internet at his home?  He’s desperately trying to avoid his wife?  He lives alone and just wants to be around people?  We need 5 more questions!!

Or just chalk it up to the fact that people are weird.

APPraisal: Mass Effect Galaxy

January 25, 2010

I finally got around to playing Mass Effect Galaxy.  Although it’s been out since June of last year, I never got around to it.  But with the imminent release of Mass Effect 2 tomorrow on the PC and Xbox 360, I’ve been immersing myself in all things Mass Effect again, like reading the latest novel, Mass Effect: Ascension, and the new comic Mass Effect: Redemption.  So I figured it was time to give Mass Effect Galaxy a shot.

Get An Ad

January 20, 2010

AdFreak.com has compiled links to videos of every “Get A Mac” ad ever aired in the U.S. since the campaign’s inception in 2006.  They haven’t aired a new one since October so this may well be the complete campaign.  Apple’s website has quite a few of these but not every single one.

Even though Windows 7 seems like a big step in the right direction for Microsoft, I still love saying “Windows 7 won’t have any of the problems that Windows Vista had…” or similar when I’m using one of my myriad of problematic work computers (from ad #64).  Check them out!

APPraisal: Pac-Man Championship Edition

January 18, 2010

Throughout the years, re-imaginings of Pac-Man have generally sucked.  “New” Pac-Man games haven’t been good since Ms. Pac-Man.  But when Pac-Man Championship Edition came on the scene in 2007, it created quite a stir.  The swansong game of original Pac-Man creator Tōru Iwatani,Pac-Man Championship Edition was released on the Xbox Live Arcade in 2007.  Does the iPhone / iPod Touch version of Pac-Man C.E. stand a ghost of a chance?

Games Played in 2009

December 31, 2009

I tend to buy more games than I play, and play more games than I finish, so I though this year I’d make a list of games played, with an * next to ones I’ve finished.  I’m sure this list will miss a lot, but here’s a go at it.

  • Age of Booty (XBLA) *
  • Animal Crossing: City Fold (Wii)
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3)
  • The Beatles: Rock Band (Xbox 360) *
  • Bejeweled Blitz (web & iPod touch)

  • Beyond Good And Evil (Gamecube)
  • Chrono Trigger (DS)
  • Deadly Creatures (Wii)
  • Dead Space (PS3)
  • Dragon Age: Origins (XBLA)
  • Dragon’s Lair (iPod Touch)
  • Dungeon Hunter (iPod Touch)

  • Moon (DS)
  • New Super Mario Bros Wii (Wii)
  • NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits (Wiiware)
  • Pac-Man Championship Edition (XBLA & iPod Touch)
  • Peggle (iPod Touch)
  • Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360) *
  • Resistance 2 (PS3) *
  • Rock Band (iPod Touch)
  • The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition (XBLA & iPod Touch)
  • Shadow Complex (XBLA) *
  • Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii)
  • Sims 3 (Mac)
  • Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
  • Tales of Monkey Island Part 1 (Wiiware)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Reshelled (XBLA)
  • Toki Tori (Wiiware)
  • Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (PS3) *
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3) *
  • Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (Mac) *
  • Wii Sports Resort (Wii)
  • World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (Mac)

Not a bad list.  I actually finished more than I expected. Sadly, there are no PSP games on that list.  Not a good year for the PSP, even outside the PSP Go fiasco.  The Playstation 3, the console I have the least amount of games for, actually had a very good showing this year.

For those that just have to know, my Game of the Year, without a shred of doubt, is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
