I was watching True Blood on DVD and this popped into my mind right before the start of an episode. Gotta love it.

V – Fall 2009 Preview
August 26, 2009I’m not a huge fan of “everything old is new again.” Hollywood in particular is devoid of imagination (except for Pixar). But Battlestar Galactica was a pleasant surprise, so you never know. I was a big fan of the original V miniseries and show.

Real Commodore 64 Laptop
April 5, 2009
I think I’m in love.
I was browsing around tonight rather bored, and surfed to modder Ben Heckendorn’s site to see if he had posted anything new. Boy did he! His latest creation is a Commodore 64 laptop with real hardware installed. It has a C64C motherboard installed, and includes a cartridge slot. It uses a 1541-III DTV to “emulate” a floppy drive using an SD card. Pretty slick. It uses the original keyboard (the function keys are below it instead of to the side) and has an LCD screen that shows some SD card information. Red LED indicatiors. Volume slider. And a Gamecube power supply instead of the notoriously janky original style.

Check out the whole build with more pictures and video at benheck.com. I want one, Ben. I need one. Much much better than the Windows-based Commodore laptop.

Papercraft Friday #34: VF-1S Valkyrie
March 27, 2009

This week’s model brings back fond memories of watching anime on Saturday mornings at Pantera’s Pizza in the mid-80′s. It’s the VF-1S Valkyrie from Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (Japan) and Robotech (USA). The model, from the SF Paper Craft Gallery, comes in two build modes: Fighter mode and Gerwalk mode. 3 model pages each, so not terribly complicated, but nicely detailed. Good times.

ABC to remake V
January 27, 2009Sometimes it’s difficult to like a TV program. Especially “cult” ones, or ones with a fan following. After it’s gone, you hope that someday it’ll come back, and that everyone will end up liking it , proving you were right all along. Unfortunately, if and when they do come back, they usually turn out more like Knight Rider or Bionic Woman, and less like Doctor Who or Battlestar Galactica. So announcements of remakes bring a sense of joy and trepidation.
ABC has apparently decided to make a pilot rework of “V”. Back in the 80′s, “V” was pretty popular as a mini-series, which spawned a sequel miniseries, which spawned a TV show that ran for one year. It got progressively worse each iteration, but it was still a novel premise that could have gone much further.
Kenneth Johnson, who wrote and directed the original mini-series, is reportedly not involved. (He was responsible for shows such as The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, The Incredible Hulk, and Alien Nation.) Johnson has been trying to do a remake or theatrical production for years, so his exclusion doesn’t bode well in my mind for this new remake. Time will tell.

Papercraft Friday #22: Airwolf
January 2, 2009
This week’s papercraft has a bit of an 80′s inspiration. The “kids” these days probably don’t even remember Airwolf, which ran from 1984 to 1987. It’s rarely even syndicated. But if stealth, supersonic helicopters are your thing, well you’re in luck!
DPileggi is hosting William Aldridge’s excellent Airwolf model. You can download instructions and the model from his website. Get building, Hawke! The FIRM is waiting.

Speed Racer Movie Trailer
December 7, 2007We’re big Speed Racer fans at our house. I loved it as a kid, and now my kids love it (they insisted on watching it last night). I’m not sure how I feel about the new live-action movie. In some ways it looks like they’ve gotten things right. The characters look right, the car sounds look right… I’m just not sure I like the ‘Speed Racer meets Cat in the Hat’ visuals. Here’s the first trailer… see for yourself. It’s coming out this summer.
