Another V Trailer

August 28, 2009

I missed this one when I posted earlier in the week.

The news of the day is that ABC shut down production for two weeks to “take advantage of our November premiere to maximize creative opportunities and deliver the audience the best show possible.”  Sounds like network-speak for “things are not going as well as planned.”  Hopefully it’s an indication of good things to come, and not a sign of trouble ahead.

Papercraft Friday #56: Wii Sports Resort Wuhu Island

August 28, 2009

wuhu

Have you been to Wuhu Island?  I bet millions of you have.  It’s not only the location of the new Wii Sports Resort (which has sold more than 1 million copies in its first month), but also the location of the running portion of Wii Fit, which has sold over 22 million copies to date.  Of course, the island took much more prominence the moment you jumped out of the plane and parachuted down to it in Wii Sports Resort.

Nintendo Papercraft posted a model of Wuhu Island last week from its resident designer ddi7i4d.  Stay fit!

Homemade NES Mini Arcade Cabinet

August 27, 2009

MiniNESarcade

A couple of the gaming blogs have run a story today about a custom-built NES mini arcade cabinet that user russm313 built and posted on the instructables.com website.  I don’t recall ever seeing someone build a “half” arcade cabinet like this, though of course you see them in bars and such.  What a great concept for someone like me with very limited space, or just a home bar application.

My birthday will be here before you know it.  If only I knew cranky someone who was good at building things….

You can see a video of the finished product after the jump.

Follow-up: Google Earth Moon Lander

August 27, 2009

lunarlander3d

A reader sent me a link today to another Lunar Lander game, as a follow-up to my blog post last month. This version from PlanetInAction.com requires the Google Earth plugin for your browser, and takes a side-scrolling approach to landing on the moon, using the Google Earth maps of the actual landing area of Apollo 11.

If you com across any more fun Lunar Lander type games, send them my way!

V – Fall 2009 Preview

August 26, 2009

I’m not a huge fan of “everything old is new again.”  Hollywood in particular is devoid of imagination (except for Pixar).  But Battlestar Galactica was a pleasant surprise, so you never know.  I was a big fan of the original V miniseries and show.

Game Impressions: Shadow Complex

August 24, 2009

cboxshadowncomplex

Introduction

One of the most highly anticipated games this summer has been Shadow Complex.  Part of XBLA’s Summer of Arcade 2009, Shadow Complex has been hailed as a game that “reset(s) the bar for what we can expect from an Xbox Live Arcade title” (Kotaku).  It has also been called “one of the best gaming experiences of this generation” (CAG) and “one of the best games yet in 2009.” (IGN)  Whenever a game gets this kind of press, my BS radar goes off.  Things are always “the best” until next week, just like stores have “the lowest price ever” until next week’s sale.  So does Shadow Complex live up to the hype?

Papercraft Friday #55: Samus’ Varia Suit Helmet

August 21, 2009

samushelmetEveryone is excited about the impending release of Batman: Arkham Asylum videogame, but I’m more than a little jazzed about the Metroid Prime Trilogy Collector’s Edition coming to Wii next week, with new Wii controls.  I actually already own all 3 Metroid Prime games, but never got very far in any of them.  I’m hoping the new release will inspire me to sit down and play through them, ala Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition when it came to the Wii.  So it’s fitting that PaperCraft Museum recently posted a wearable model of Samus Aran’s Varia Suit Helmet.  Just the thing to work on this weekend before the Trilogy release.  Or if you prefer, try the complete Samus Aran from Papercraft Friday #33.
