Modded Atari 2600 = Old Skool Fun
June 3, 2009
I saw an article awhile back on Ben Heckendorn’s site about modder Parker Dillmann, a.k.a “The Longhorn Engineer” and his Atari 2600 video mod. He sells circuit board mod kits to add composite/S-video picture functionality to the 2600. That’s been an issue of mine the last few years… trying to hook up my 2600 (the original I had as a kid) to the new high-def TV’s.
I’m not much of a modder… I’ve never soldered in my life and don’t plan to start anytime soon. But when I saw that Parker will also mod your console for you, I jumped at the chance. After an exchange of emails, I boxed up my beloved 2600 and sent it off. A few weeks later, it has arrived! I hooked it up and it works great. The kids were even arguing over who gets to play Yar’s Revenge and Ms. Pac-Man next.
Here’s what the back of the 2600 looks like now:

Here it is, all hooked up and ready to go:

and here’s a little Yar’s Revenge action:

I call next on Ms. Pacman!
