Game Impressions: Final Fantasy XII
January 28, 2009
Before you say “Why is he giving game impressions on a game that came out in 2006,” let me say (a) I don’t care, and (b) any decent game is worth playing at any time, not just within so many days of release. I actually started playing Final Fantasy XII shortly after it was released. Unfortunately, it was released on October 31, 2006 in North America, a mere 20 days before a little console called the Nintendo Wii came out. I got distracted by the release of the Wii started playing Zelda Twilight Princess. I tried to juggle both and ended up finishing neither. But the lure of Final Fantasy XII persisted, and I picked it back up again in the Fall of ’08, finally finishing the main storyline in January 2009. So was it worth a two year playthrough?

ABC to remake V
January 27, 2009Sometimes it’s difficult to like a TV program. Especially “cult” ones, or ones with a fan following. After it’s gone, you hope that someday it’ll come back, and that everyone will end up liking it , proving you were right all along. Unfortunately, if and when they do come back, they usually turn out more like Knight Rider or Bionic Woman, and less like Doctor Who or Battlestar Galactica. So announcements of remakes bring a sense of joy and trepidation.
ABC has apparently decided to make a pilot rework of “V”. Back in the 80′s, “V” was pretty popular as a mini-series, which spawned a sequel miniseries, which spawned a TV show that ran for one year. It got progressively worse each iteration, but it was still a novel premise that could have gone much further.
Kenneth Johnson, who wrote and directed the original mini-series, is reportedly not involved. (He was responsible for shows such as The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, The Incredible Hulk, and Alien Nation.) Johnson has been trying to do a remake or theatrical production for years, so his exclusion doesn’t bode well in my mind for this new remake. Time will tell.

The Nintendo Dilemma
January 27, 2009I’ve started and deleted this post several times, because I’ve been having a hard time collating my thoughts into a coherent post. I probably won’t succeed this time either. But I keep having this nagging jumble of thoughts that I need to get out. It’s gonna be a long ride. It’s about what I like to call The Nintendo Dilemma.

Commodore 64 on your Phone
January 26, 2009Yeah, okay, I can’t resist a story about my beloved C64. This video above has been widely spread around by Engadget, Boy Genius Report and other places, and I couldn’t resist linking it as well. It’s of someone using the emulator Frodo to play Commodore 64 games on their Nokia S60. Sweet.
I recently tried setting up my C64 at home again in a space I cleared, but I had video issues with it. I think a chip must be going out. *sadness* I’ll have to shop around for a used one somewhere. But hey, on the bright side, I have an empty space for something else! How often does that happen! (At my place… almost never.)

Zark’s Most Anticipated DS Games of 2009
January 26, 2009Finally, we come to the last list, my anticipated games of 2009 for the Nintendo DS. And quite a long list it is. This year is shaping up to be a good one for the little dual screen handheld.

Zark’s Most Anticipated PSP Games of 2009
January 24, 2009
The PSP deserves less ports and more original content. Will it be getting it in 2009?

Zark’s Most Anticipated MultiPlatform Games of 2009
January 23, 2009
It’s time for the multiplatform list. Given the lack of exclusives this year so far on everything except the Wii, this list is substantially longer than some other lists.

Gamerscore Blog Firings and the Ineptitude of Big Business
January 23, 2009
I remind myself all the time of why I’m glad that I don’t work for a big corporate entity. Big corporations make decisions that make make no logical sense, and usually they have no clue what they did. Mass layoffs and firings are a prime example of this. We see that happening everywhere these days, both from companies that aren’t doing well and companies that fear that they might not do well unless they do something… and that something usually means axing people. But what happens if your actions sabotage years of strategic effort?
