Zark’s Top 10 Games (I Wish I Played) in 2008

December 31, 2008

wishingwellAt the end of previous years, I published my Top 10 list of videogames for the year.  This list was always based on games I actually played very far through or finished, not just a list based on what IGN or Gamespot or Kotaku say were the best games of the year.  This put me in a bit of a quandry for 2008, as I’ve just not had the time I’d like to have had to play through many games.  So this year, I decided to mix it up a bit and do my Top 10 List of Games I Wish I Played.  I do have the distinction of owning every single one of these games… my desire outstripes my free time!

Honorable mentions: Fallout 3 (played until I left the Vault), Fable 2 (made it to Bowerstone in Chapter 3), De Blob (free t-shirt!), Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (got the Wii and 360 versions), Dead Space (watched the DVD and read the comic), Braid (played some of the demo), Prince of Persia (limited edition with pre-order), Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (first full price PS3 game purchase), Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (I hear it’s brutally hard), Mirror’s Edge (reading the comic monthly), and Okami (got my replacement game sleeves).

And now, the top 10….

10.  Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility
The formula never gets old for me.  Not much “innovation” here, but I really want to get started on it soon.

9.  God of War: Chains of Olympus
I got the demo disc in the mail and played all the way through it.  Seemed very solid and a good continuation of the series.  Super solid PSP game.

8.  Boom Blox
I heard a lot about this title, from how it was a decent Wii title to how no one bought it.  Well it’s up to 670,000 copies sold and Boom Blox 2 is confirmed.  Not too shabby.

7.  Resistance 2
I played through Resistance: Fall of Man in 2008 when it came out under the Greatest Hits label, and found it rather enjoyable.  Maybe I’ll get around to Resistance 2 before it joins the original as a Greatest Hits release.

6.  World of Goo
The concept is similar to Lemmings (one of my all-time favorites), and maybe the best WiiWare game.  It’s got a 94 average on metacritic.com and the WiiWare version scores higher than the PC version.

5.  Professor Layton and the Curious Village
I love quirky titles like this.  The gameplay is right up my alley.  I think I carried this with me on 3 trips, and still haven’t played it once.

4.  LittleBigPlanet
The much lauded PS3 title was the second full-price game I purchased for the system.  Looked like an interesting concept that I’d get bored quickly with, but I haven’t even started it yet.  I do download free costumes for Sackboy from the Playstation Store though, in anticipation of one day playing it.

3.  No More Heroes
An innovative and edgy Wii game that sort of defies the standard Wii criticisms.  Too bad it hasn’t even sold 400,000 copies.  I think this is one of those games that “gamers” will miss out on because everyone knows there are no good games on the Wii.   *sarcasm*

2.  Left 4 Dead
Online multiplayer zombie killfest.  Justin swears he’ll play this with me someday.  ;)

1.  Chrono Trigger DS
Yes, my #1 title is a DS remake of a Playstation remake of an original SNES game.  I’ve been wanting to play some version of it forever.  I tried and didn’t get very far into the SNES version, and bought but never played the Playstation version packaged in the Final Fantasy Chronicles.  I started it again on the DS and it’s in my DS right now, but I never seem to be able to pick it up and play it.

So many great games, so little time…
