MSI Wind Unboxing

December 28, 2008

So… I mentioned last week about how I hadn’t really bought into the whole netbook craze, mainly because Apple doesn’t make a netbook (yet).  But I have always wanted a second computer at my desk, to stream a video, run chat, pull up info while playing WoW, or whatever.  My desk area isn’t that big, however, to have two big monitors, or even have a normal sized MacBook.  When I found out that some people have been hacking netbooks to run Mac OS X, my interest perked up considerably.

I bounced the idea of my hack-loving gadget hound friend Justin who, God love ‘im ran with the idea!  He worked out how it was done on the MSI Wind with as little pain and software modification as possible, and showed me how to do it!  Nothing better than a nice fresh OS X install.

Mac OS Wind

The machine is an MSI Wind U-100, with an Intel Atom 1.6GHz and a SATA 120GB hard drive.  It came with 1GB of DDR2 memory, but I added another 1GB stick, which coincidentally came out of my iMac about 11 months ago after upgrading its memory.  You have to unscrew and remove the bottom of the unit to get to the memory slot, which exists but is empty.  It voids the warranty with MSI to take the screws out, which is dumb thing for them to do just for a memory upgrade.  Microsoft places a hard limit of 1GB on Windows XP netbooks, so maybe it has something to do with that.

It’s running Mac OS X 10.5.6.  The screen resolution is 1024×600, so I have the dock hidden at the bottom for more screen real estate.  Wireless is working, audio works fine.   Never tried the ethernet port since I went straight wireless.  There is no bluetooth on the machine, and I haven’t tested a dongle yet.

  2. Your journey to the Dark Side is now complete.
Steve Jobs will be mailing you your black turtleneck and your Mac Elitist membership card as soon as your newest device sucks out your remaining soul pieces and sends them to Apple.
    Hee hee.

  3. You think ol’ Steve-o would approve???
