Frozen Zune, Anyone?
December 31, 2008
Looks like some Zune lovers woke up to a surprise this morning. Apparently, at 2am this morning, every 30GB Zune on the planet crashed at the same time. Froze up. When they’re rebooted, they just display a loading bar. Oops. Some are calling it Y2K9. Too funny. Sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie. ”The first sign was when all the Zune’s froze. But no one realized the significance, and what it meant to the fate of humanity….”

Zark’s Top 10 Games (I Wish I Played) in 2008
December 31, 2008
At the end of previous years, I published my Top 10 list of videogames for the year. This list was always based on games I actually played very far through or finished, not just a list based on what IGN or Gamespot or Kotaku say were the best games of the year. This put me in a bit of a quandry for 2008, as I’ve just not had the time I’d like to have had to play through many games. So this year, I decided to mix it up a bit and do my Top 10 List of Games I Wish I Played. I do have the distinction of owning every single one of these games… my desire outstripes my free time!
Honorable mentions: Fallout 3 (played until I left the Vault), Fable 2 (made it to Bowerstone in Chapter 3), De Blob (free t-shirt!), Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (got the Wii and 360 versions), Dead Space (watched the DVD and read the comic), Braid (played some of the demo), Prince of Persia (limited edition with pre-order), Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (first full price PS3 game purchase), Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (I hear it’s brutally hard), Mirror’s Edge (reading the comic monthly), and Okami (got my replacement game sleeves).
And now, the top 10….

Calvin & Hobbes vs Nostradamus
December 30, 2008This strip has been circulating around for the past couple of days. You mainly see people attribute it to being 15 years old, but I haven’t found an actual date for it. Given that Bill Watterson published the last Calvin and Hobbes strip 13 years ago tomorrow, the 15 year attribution could be correct. In any case, it sure echoes the financial crisis of recent days.
I miss Calvin and Hobbes. What a good strip.
Hey! Shamless plug… don’t forget you can subscribe to my RSS feed. I don’t mention it very often, and sometimes people are surprised when they realize they can.

MSI Wind Unboxing
December 28, 2008So… I mentioned last week about how I hadn’t really bought into the whole netbook craze, mainly because Apple doesn’t make a netbook (yet). But I have always wanted a second computer at my desk, to stream a video, run chat, pull up info while playing WoW, or whatever. My desk area isn’t that big, however, to have two big monitors, or even have a normal sized MacBook. When I found out that some people have been hacking netbooks to run Mac OS X, my interest perked up considerably.

Papercraft Friday #21: Link and Zelda
December 26, 2008

How about ending the year with a blast from the past! This week I chose two models that go well together: Link (from the N64 game The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask) and Princess Zelda (from the N64 game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time). Keep Hyrule safe for the new year by building these two classic gaming icons. Thanks to Ninjatoes for the models. May the Triforce be with you.

Merry Christmas to All
December 25, 2008
Just wanted to post a small Merry Christmas from my family to everyone on this wonderful day. I hope you are spending it with the people you love and care for.
Now I’m going to go back and spend some time with mine.

Free Music
December 24, 2008
I am strangely fascinated by game music. I think it’s a very underrated music genre. People think of game music as the Mario theme or Zelda theme, but some game music over the last 10-15 years have been orchestral masterworks. I find many things that are peaceful to listen to in the background while working or just relaxing at home.
It’s sometimes difficult to track down official soundtracks, and they are usually not cheap. You can find some music for free (and legit) online if you pay attention though. For instance, you can still download the main theme from the new Tomb Raider Underworld game from Academy Award Winning composer Troels Folmann’s website. Have a listen:
You can also still get the Bioshock orchestral score from 2kGames website, as I first mentioned back in 2007. The (soon-to-be-remade ) The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay soundtrack is available at GameSpot (might require a free login).
If you’ve never thought about listening to game music outside of the actual game, give some of this free music a try. You might find that you have a passion for game music that extends beyond the controller.

Beware the Wii
December 23, 2008According to The Sun:
TEN people a week in Britain are hospitalised from playing Wii games.
The growing toll has prompted NHS doctors to warn of the dangers. Wii-itis sufferers usually have excruciating pain in the right shoulder or knee.
Dr Dev Mukerjee, of Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex, said: “There has been a 100 per cent increase in patients complaining of Wii-itis. “I’ve seen many patients aged between eight and 13 — and I’ve seen adults.
“It’s possible that Wii-itus may lead to rheumatism and arthritis in later life. Patients often have inflammation of the shoulder or wrist.” Others have a ligament injury dubbed Wii-knee which some have blamed on the popular Wii-Fit game.
Dr Mukerjee said: “People who are double-jointed are most likely to suffer from Wii-knee — and in extreme cases the knee cap can be dislocated or can even pop out.” Treatment includes cortisone injections and anti-inflammatory painkillers. Recovery takes up to three months.
OMG how dangerous! A 100% increase (from 5 to 10 people per country per week)! You could have rheumatism and arthritis in later life! Wii-knee! Cortisone injections! Painkillers! Those are addicting! I never knew… I never knew… First we find out that playing games was addicting, and now we find out that the injuries suffered through play could be life-altering! And we find this out right before Christmas! Just think of all those torture machines that are already wrapped and under the tree! Oh the humanity…
