Well it looks like we know know who’s guarding that treasure chest from last week. A big scary dragon!
And by big, I mean BIG! What a beast! You can download the dragon here, once again compliments of the Unofficial World of Warcraft Papercraft website. That wraps up Warcraft papercraft month folks. Hope to see you playing the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King expansion on November 13th. Stay tuned for next week’s exciting installment of Papercraft Friday!
As I mentioned before, I’ve been listening to The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. Almost halfway through book 7 and it’s awesome. Although I had listened to the first few books of the series in the 90′s, I never listened to the last three when they were released. Something I was always meaning to do but never got around to. The publication of The Dark Tower comics prompted me to finally do it. I’d listened to the first couple of books a few times already, even the expanded first book, and remembered them very well, so I started on book 3 and have been working my way through ever since. When I’m done I’ll start on the comics.
I’ve had a similar sort of relationship with The Stand by Stephen King. I have the 1987 “unabridged” audiobook from Books On Tape, but never listened to it. One reason is that King released “complete and uncut” version of The Stand in 1991. Apparently, at the time the original was to be released, the publisher determined that the book was so long that it would be too costly to print, compared to what they deemed consumers would pay for a novel. So King cut out about 400 pages. Always preferring to read what the author had originally intended, I was therefore hesitant to commit to the incomplete audio version.
An uncut audio version had never been released. Why that is I can’t fathom. Probably something to do with the rights to it with Books On Tape or some nonsense. And I’ve “read” most Stephen King stories through audiobooks, because there are quite a few of them and they are read by some excellent narrators like the late Frank Muller. So quite a few years back I picked up the 1141 page uncut version of The Stand in paperback and started reading it. I probably got about 40% into it and then, as is often the case, got distracted by something else and put it down and never went back to it. I watched the tv mini-series once and that was it.
So when I heard that they were going to produce a comic version of The Stand, I dug out my paperback and started reading it again, from the beginning. I’m about 80 pages in right now. And this month, Volume 1 the first chapter of Stephen King: The Stand hit store shelves. UGO.com has an online preview of the first 6 pages of the first issue. I have to say that having just read through the beginning of the book, so far the comic is spot on with characters and situations and dialog from the book. If the rest is done that well, it will be a long, excellent and very faithful series. Check it out! Marvel has also posted some interior page views of issue #2 here.
I thought I’d pick another easy model for this week as we continue Warcraft papercraft month. Partly because it’s a small clue to next week, and partly because next week’s will be time-consuming.
…and I’ve been made into a stereotype? Looks like Microsoft is switching gears again. After twoconfusing Microsoft ads featuring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld, the Windows Not Walls campaign is changing tactics, this time going for a more direct jab at Apple’s successful campaign.
The next ad features a Microsoft engineer that looks like John Hodgman (PC from the Apple campaign) firing back at Apple and trying to reassert control over the PC branding. This approach seems a little more logical than Bill Gates buying shoes and adjusting his shorts.
I think you ought to know I’m feeling very depressed. Is Douglas Adams’ widow not getting enough in royalties or something? According to an article on news.com.au, she’s blessed the comissioning of a sixth Hitchhiker’s Guide book, to be written by children’s author Eoin Colfer.
Does anyone think this is a good idea, other than the publisher, widow and author, who are trying to make a quick buck off the late writer’s legendary work? These things NEVER turn out as good as what the original person did. Heck, many times even sequels done by the original person don’t live up to their first piece.
I won’t enjoy it. This will all end in tears. And me with this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left side…
Commercial #2 is out in the Windows Not Walls series. While there were one or two parts I laughed pretty good at, the first one was better. I still don’t see how this makes Microsoft look any better or sell more operating systems. Gates looks to stiff and wooden, and while I applaud him for allowing to be made to look rather foolish, they are trying to make him funny and it just doesn’t work well. Like Seinfeld is too good next to him.
Awww…. ain’t he cute! My friend Justin has one of these in-game, which were given out at Blizzcon a few years ago. It’s so cute when he dances.
After last week’s complicated Thrall model, I figured that an easier one might work well this week. Another model by from the Unofficial World of Warcraft Papercraft site, this time in .pdf format and with numbered tabs, I present Murky by Ted Fallenger.
As I mentioned last week, there’s a pretty cool new website for old games, called GOG.com. Their beta keys just started going out today to people who signed up for the beta. Here are my thoughts on the site.

My friend Moge has been saying for years that my house must be built on top of an indian burial ground or something, because I was always having trouble with my computer. Something was always breaking, dying, blue screening and just generally not working for no good reason. This strip on Penny Arcade made me think of that.
I haven’t had issues like that in months. Did I move? Did I get a blessing from a great indian shaman? Nope. I got a Mac. It just works.
You can see the rest of the Penny Arcade strip here.
